VIDEO (Flipbook review starts at 3:40 )
Thanks for including my zines and flipbooks in your Bling Review 41. I linked it on all of my social media, and I know Raquel did the same. I especially liked your response to my 9/11 Flipbook project. I wanted the little flipbook to confuse people, make them question my motives, and hopefully see the hypocrisy in the media broadcasting the terrorists attacks. I believe showing those images over and over on national television terrorized the viewing public and gave power to the very people who wanted to frighten us. I think my miniature flipbook has healing qualities similar to exposure therapy. Turning the massive catastrophe into a little toy shrinks the damage into a manageable size. The simple act of flipping the animation backwards seems to undo the horror. The most important thing to me is dialog and I really appreciate your feedback.
Hey Scott, good to hear back from you! Yeah, it was a nice surprise to get your pack of stuff in the mail. I"m always excited and happy to meet new artists.
The 9-11 Flipbook! I like it because it's weird and fun to talk about and controversial. But although I agree with a lot of your opinions (that they showed the crashes too much on TV, and that the media actually play just as big of a role as the terrorists themselves in scaring and scarring the US population) I think your "answer" to this problem (the 9-11 Flipbook) is completely wrong. You say they showed it too much, then you make a way for us to show it again. And by making it small and cute, you say you are somehow helping the massive tragedy seem less scary, but if anything that only makes something real seem less real, which is how people repress feelings (fairly unhealthy way of dealing with things.)
In other words, I like the flipbook, but think it has ZERO healing qualities. It's actually going to do further mental and psychological damage to most people. The only potential it has to heal is simply that it brings up the topic and opens a dialog, but so does the sentence, "Hey, how did 9-11 affect you?" The visual is just a shocking way to make a name for yourself as an artist. Which I'm not opposed to. But don't pretend it's more than it is.
Those are my thoughts!
